For the first time since November 2012, the U.S. claimed the most powerful supercomputer in the world, leading a significant turnover in which four of the five top systems were either new or substantially upgraded. Tableau Software has acquired Empirical Systems, an AI startup that originated at the MIT Probabilistic Computing Project. Based in Cambridge, Mass., Empirical Systems has a team of engineers and data science professionals who created an analysis platform that helps customers to automatically analyze and understand their structured data. Empirical was co-founded by CEO Richard Tibbetts, who previously co-founded StreamBase (acquired by TIBCO); engineering lead Madeleine Thompson, formerly of Google; and scientific advisor Vikash Mansinghka, who leads the MIT Probabilistic Computing Project.

With the E.U.'s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) set to go into effect in less than 2 weeks, new research shows U.S. companies are still unprepared. The research garnered responses from U.S. companies with annual revenue greater than $10 million regarding their understanding of and preparedness for GDPR, uncovering two areas where companies are significantly exposed to legal risk by these new regulations. Penalties go into effect on May 25, 2018, and non-compliant organizations risk triggering fines up to 20 euros million or 4% of global revenue, whichever is higher.
