MemSQL has introduced the MemSQL Spark Connector. According to the vendor, the combination of an in-memory database from MemSQL and Spark's memory optimized processing framework gives enterprises the benefit of fast access to transactions, ETL, and analytics. The MemSQL Spark Connector is also available as an open source offering, providing developers the ability to adapt it to their needs.

Cloud Foundry Foundation, a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) open source project, has been launched as an independent non-profit foundation. The Cloud Foundry Foundation will be managed as a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project and operate under a system of open governance created by a team of open source experts from founding Platinum Members EMC, HP, IBM, Intel, Pivotal, SAP, and VMware. "SAP is committed to contributing to open-source PaaS technologies, including integration of technologies such as the SAP HANA® platform and Internet of Things as part of SAP HANA Cloud Platform," said Björn Goerke, executive vice president and corporate officer, Product and Innovation Technology, SAP.

Rackspace has announced new support for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 In-Memory Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and AlwaysOn Availability. Rackspace now powers more than 10,000 compute instances running Microsoft SQL Server on its private and public clouds. By combining In-Memory OLTP with Managed High Availability, Rackspace says it can help customers speed up OLTP workloads to up to 30x while enabling greater uptime.

There's good news and bad news on the cybersecurity front, an IBM study finds. Over the past 2 years, there has been a 50% decline in the number of cyberattacks against U.S. retailers. However, the number of records stolen from them remains at near record highs. IBM security researchers report that in 2014, cyber attackers still managed to steal more than 61 million records from retailers despite the decline in attacks, demonstrating cyber criminals' increasing sophistication and efficiency. Ironically, while Black Friday and Cyber Monday were identified as the two biggest shopping days of the year by IBM's Digital Analytics Benchmark, cyber attackers reduced their activity across all industries on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, rather than taking action.

Cloud is being embraced strongly at Oracle. That is the message loud and clear from the company, which brought its CloudWorld to New York City on January 13. During the event, which drew customers, analysts, and thought leaders, Oracle offered an overview of its cloud strategy and the progress the company has made thus far in addressing consumers and enterprise constituents in the cloud. Oracle's cloud strategy is very simple, said Thomas Kurian, president, Oracle Product Development. The idea is to bring Oracle's business applications, technology, software, database, middleware, analytic tools and infrastructure "to any customer anywhere in the world through the internet browser."

For the 22nd consecutive year, IBM topped the annual list of U.S. patent recipients. The company just announced that it received a record 7,534 patents in 2014, and that on average, IBM inventors earned more than 20 patents a day. After IBM, the next top patent earner in 2014 was Samsung with 4,952. During IBM's 22 years at the top of the patent list, IBM inventors have received more than 81,500 U.S. patents.

Neil Mendelson, Oracle vice president of big data and advanced analytics, shared Oracle's "Top 7" big data predictions for 2015. The introduction of increased transactional capability into non-relational databases makes sense—in the same way that providing SQL layers on top of Hadoop and many other non-relational stores makes sense. But it does raise the possibility of convergence of relational and non-relational systems. After all, if I take a non-relational database and add SQL and ACID transactions, have I still got a non-relational database, or have I come full circle back to the relational model?

Rackspace has announced its affiliation with the OpenPOWER Foundation, and is now an official member. Rackspace announced its affiliation with OpenPOWER in a blog authored by Aaron Sullivan, senior director and distinguished engineer at Rackspace. According to Sullivan, Rackspace has already been involved with OpenPOWER for more than 18 months. "We worked amongst the founders for months before the foundation launched, and remained engaged after launch, but chose to remain quiet. We've been evaluating the technology and the movement for quite some time," noted Sullivan.
