To help companies evaluate big data systems, a new benchmark has been launched by the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC). TPCx-HS is a major achievement for two reasons, noted Raghunath Nambiar, chairman of the TPCx-HS committee, and a distinguished engineer at Cisco. It is the first vendor-neutral benchmark focused on big data systems - which have become a critical part of the enterprise IT ecosystem. TPCx-HS is also the first Express-class benchmark issued by the TPC.

Expanding its ecosystem, NoSQL database provider Couchbase has formalized its partnershhips with Cloudsoft, Cumulogic and Elasticbox. This particular announcement is focused on orchestration vendors - companies that provide database as a service technology that other companies can use to develop their own database as a service for internal requirements, said Bob Wiederhold, CEO of Couchbase.

At the summer 2014 SHARE conference in Pittsburgh, Brian Peterson, who has been president of SHARE for the past two years, spoke about the challenges facing companies today as they deal with emerging IT requirements and the successful approaches for dealing with the mainframe skills shortage. A new software platform and supporting services from GT Software enables users to access critical information from across the organization, regardless of where the data resides, on or off the mainframe. GT Software's Data Unification Solution includes Ivory Data Hub v5.3, which provides SQL support for all data types, both on and off the mainframe, including VSAM, DB2, Oracle, and SQL Server.

Oracle's Exadata Database Machine X4-8 has been enhanced to provide large performance and memory increases compared to the previous generation. Hardware enhancements include 50% more database compute cores, using the Intel Xeon E7 v2 15-core processors, and up to 6TB of memory per compute node for a total of 12TB per rack. The result, says Oracle, is that the Exadata Database Machine X4-8 can consolidate hundreds of databases and can run massive databases entirely in-memory.

Oracle recently revealed that NCR, VRSG, Sascar, UL, and Asiana Airlines are among the latest customers using Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud. To date, says Oracle, hundreds of customers across 52 countries and 21 industries have adopted Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud to help reduce the cost and complexity of deploying, consolidating and virtualizing their enterprise applications, and a record number of partners have also adopted Exalogic.

At the HP Vertica Big Data Conference in Boston, Logi Analytics announced a new partnership with Vertica. With the introduction of Logi Vision for HP Vertica, Vertica is now integrated with the complete suite of Logi Analytics solutions, including Logi's business information platform, Logi Info. This enables Logi Analytics and HP Vertica customers to address a broad range of use cases - including data discovery, dashboards and reports, and embedding analytics into operational business applications.

Splice Machine, a provider of a Hadoop RDBMS, has added a $3 million extension to its Series B financing provided by venture capital firm Correlation Ventures, along with database industry leaders Roger J. Sippl and Roger Bamford. The new funding adds to the initial $15 million Series B investment from Interwest Partners and Mohr Davidow Ventures (MDV), bringing the total round to $18 million.

VoltDB, provider of an in-memory NewSQL database, is now participating in the IBM Cloud Marketplace, which combines IBM's capabilities-as-a-service and those of partners and third-party vendors. The vendors say that, according to a recent benchmark, VoltDB running in the SoftLayer cloud delivers faster application performance than Amazon Web Services.

X15 Enterprise, which provides an end-to-end solution for ingesting, indexing, searching and analyzing machine data, is now generally available from X15 Software. According to the vendor, X15 Enterprise allows machine data to remain in HDFS and does not require it to be duplicated into proprietary storage before it can be indexed and analyzed.

Based in Rome, Italy, CrossIdeas addresses the business requirements of auditors and risk and compliance managers withrole analytics, visualizations for better insight into user access, and alignment with compliance and access risk requirements. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Many database administrators now feel that the best way to preserve database reliability may be to take over the job of backing up their own databases. Just as end users are happier when they can do their own password resets or restore an accidentally deleted file, DBAs want greater control over their backups, restores and recoveries, and also the peace of mind of knowing that it is done to their standards. The key to making this work is integrating database applications with purpose built backup appliances (PBBAs).

The industry hype would have you believe that the key word in the phrase "big data" is big, a reference to datasets so large and complex that they cannot be managed within the confines of traditional IT systems and that the many opportunities for operational improvement that come from better analysis of data and information are reserved for those in the enterprise.
