VMware has completed the acquisition of Pivotal Software, a cloud-native platform provider. Following the acquisition, Pivotal's Class A common stock was removed from listing on the New York Stock Exchange. Pivotal will now operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of VMware. The transaction represented an enterprise value for Pivotal of approximately $2.7 billion.

When I was a young man—a long, long time ago now—I worked as an Oracle DBA (Oracle version 6, if you must know). I remember my astonishment at finding out that information in the database was stored in plain text within the database files. That meant if I could gain read access just to those files, I could read all the information in the database. It didn't matter what security controls I, as the DBA implemented at the database level—an attacker who could gain read access to the files on disk could read everything.

SolarWinds, a provider of IT management software, has acquired VividCortex, a provider of SaaS-delivered database performance management with an emphasis on databases commonly used in cloud-native applications designed to meet the needs of a wide range of customers. SolarWinds plans to add the VividCortex product to its IT operations management portfolio beginning in Q4 2019. The SaaS-based offering will complement SolarWinds' Database Performance Analyzer (DPA), an on-premise and cloud-deployed product.
