Since the very inception of MongoDB, Eliot Horowitz, MongoDB's CTO and co-founder, has been a consistent and articulate owner of the MongoDB technical vision and the apparent creative force behind MongoDB's architecture and feature set. In appointing replacement CTO Mark Porter, MongoDB has chosen someone with a high degree of "geek cred" that will hopefully satisfy developers who want to hear from someone who can speak their language. However, he also brings experience from the enterprise database and cloud world that will undoubtedly be useful.

Data gravity is the concept that data remains where it is and applications and services (and even more data) are attracted to and use that data. Moving data can be a tricky, time-consuming, and complex process, even on-prem. Now add in the movement of large quantities of enterprise data through the internet to a cloud service provider. Anyone who has managed or used big data, or even moderately large data, will immediately understand the problem.

Many organizations are building their new applications on Linux rather than the Windows operating system for reasons of security, performance, and manageability. In addition, they are now able to take advantage of avoiding mixed operating system environments in the public cloud. Many of these customers have been longtime Linux users—and although they loved SQL Server, they disliked having to run SQL Server on Windows since they were the only Windows servers in their entire enterprise.

Mullins, who is president and principal consultant of Mullins Consulting, an IBM Gold Consultant, and a longtime DBTA columnist, looked at the industry trends and issues that are impacting DBAs and fundamentally transforming the duties associated with their jobs. Cockroach Labs, the company behind CockroachDB, is receiving $86.6 million in series D funding to further grow investments in R&D to better support customers looking to move to the cloud. The funding round was co-led by Altimeter Capital and BOND with participation from Benchmark, GV, Index Ventures, Redpoint Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and Tiger Capital. This round brings Cockroach Labs' total funding to $195 million.
