Progress Software Corporation has announced what it describes as the industry's first Type 5 JDBC drivers - intended to overcome the limitations in Type 4 JDBC driver architecture, which renders them impractical for use in modern Java applications. Progress DataDirect Connect for JDBC, which features Type 5 Connect for JDBC drivers, offers a client-side, single-tier, 100 percent Java Type 4 architecture with faster performance, better use of memory footprint, and simplified deployment.

Micro Focus, provider of enterprise application modernization, testing and management solutions, has partnered with dynaTrace software to provide a new enterprise performance testing solution, branded as Silk Performance Assurance. The new offering integrates SilkPerformer, Micro Focus' enterprise-class performance testing product, with a new root cause diagnostic product powered by dynaTrace, SilkPerformer Diagnostics.

Sybase reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2010. "We are off to a very good start this year," stated John Chen, chairman, CEO and president of Sybase, during a conference call last week. "We are very pleased to report our 10th consecutive record quarter. The highlights include historical first quarter highs in revenue, operating margin, earnings and cash flow. We also have double digit growth in total revenue as well as license growth and message revenue growth."

On April 19, IBM hosted a panel discussion at the annual High Performance Computing Linux Financial Markets Show and Conference in New York City. Jean Staten Healy, director of Linux strategy at IBM, moderated the panel of industry leaders whose discussion focused on high performance considerations beyond the cluster. She was joined by Tom Befi, vice president of information services at ISO; Feargal O'Sullivan, head of enterprise software at NYSE Technologies; Len Santalucia, CTO at Vicom Infinity; and Doug O'Flaherty, senior marketing manager at Red Hat.

IBM is delivering a portfolio of software appliances across IBM brands, all powered by SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Leveraging the SUSE Appliance Program from Novell, this initiative enables IBM to provide "plug and play" appliances that lower the cost and complexity of deploying applications for small and medium-sized businesses and help independent software vendors simplify the packaging of their solutions for multiple environments, allowing them to test, deploy and scale their offerings to their customers' specific needs.

IBM will also offer the first cloud service package combining social networking and email for business starting at $7.

At the Linux Foundation's Collaboration Summit recently, Dr. Dan Frye, vice president of open system development at IBM, gave a keynote in which he reflected on the achievement and offered advice for other organizations and developers that want to improve their participation in the community.

Canonical has announced that Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition, the latest version of the popular Linux desktop distribution, which includes 3 years of support through free security and maintenance updates, will be available for free download on Thursday, April 29.

The opening of a new $30 million manufacturing facility at its Poughkeepsie site to produce the next generation of System z mainframes and high-end Power Systems servers, was recently announced by IBM. The facility, built inside an existing structure, will produce IBM's next line of System z mainframe computers and high-end Power Systems servers.

The 2010 Revelation Software Users' Conference kicked off with opening remarks today by Mike Ruane, president of Revelation Software, followed by a keynote by Tom Wilson, president of Database Trends and Applications magazine and Unisphere Research. In a presentation to analysts, customers, and the press at the Guggenheim Museum in New York last week, Oracle president Charles Phillips unveiled Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g which is intended to help customers maximize business agility and productivity by providing an integrated approach to IT management. "It's about finally trying to get control of this complex thing called IT — trying to manage the entire stack in a way that is different that is different than we have in the past. We are just now getting to the point in the evolution of the industry and in Oracle's strategy where that is now possible," Phillips said.

Participants in the survey acknowledged that steps need to be taken to control the costs and complexity of their data environments while addressing the need for continued growth. The use of advanced virtualization strategies was identified by respondents as a key to better managing these diverse environments.

Leading storage vendors have recently added support for Symantec's industry standard Thin Reclamation AP, Symantec announced. The Symantec Thin Reclamation API enables automated space reclamation for thin-provisioning storage arrays, and is now supported by Symantec partners Compellent, EMC, Fujitsu, HP and NetApp, in addition to previously announced support from 3PAR, Hitachi Data Systems and IBM.

Veryant, a provider of COBOL modernization tools, announced a new release of its isCOBOL Application Platform Suite (APS) for developing, deploying, and modernizing COBOL applications. This is the vendor's sixth product update in two years. isCOBOL's value proposition, the vendor says, is offering users the ability to continue programming in COBOL, and at the same time, modernize and deploy applications across multiple platforms in an open Java framework.

SpringSource, a division of VMware, Inc. and provider of Java application management solutions, announced the acquisition by VMware of Rabbit Technologies, Ltd., an open source software company based in the United Kingdom. SpringSource will add the RabbitMQ open messaging system into its suite of technologies that are designed to reduce the complexity associated with development, deployment and management of enterprise applications. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Vision Solutions, a provider of high availability and disaster recovery solutions for IBM Power Systems users, says that the Heritage Building Society Limited, Queensland, an Australian financial services company, is using Vision's EchoStream and EchoCluster for AIX to eliminate extended unplanned downtime, reduce disaster recovery system failover timeframes and meet extremely high service level agreements.

IBM has announced that its POWER7-based 750 Express and Power 755 models are the first four-processor systems in the industry to qualify for ENERGY STAR status. ENERGY STAR is a U.S. government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. To qualify for ENERGY STAR status, a computer system must meet specific standards for power supply and energy efficiency and provide users with data on power use, thermal output, and processor utilization at periodic intervals. In addition, the manufacturer must report power and performance information to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy, which co-manage the ENERGY STAR program.
