SUSE, an independent open source company, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Cupertino-based Rancher Labs, an open source company that provides a Kubernetes management platform. SUSE says this acquisition of Rancher represents the first step in SUSE's inorganic growth strategy since becoming a fully independent software company in March 2019.

VMware announced the company intends to acquire Datrium, expanding the current VMware Site Recovery disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) offering with Datrium's cost-optimized DRaaS solution. In a blog post by John Gilmartin, senior vice president and general manager, cloud platform business unit, VMware, he explained that this move will help customers build hybrid clouds by combining the consistent infrastructure and operations of VMware Cloud with Datrium DRaaS to reduce the cost and complexity of business continuity.

Aiven, a technology company combining open source technologies with cloud infrastructure, is launching Karapace, an open- source tool that serves as a drop-in replacement for Confluent's Kafka REST and Schema Registry. With the addition of Karapace, customers can use the tool to store Kafka schemas in a central repository and access their version history, serialize and deserialize messages, interface RESTfully with Kafka clusters, and perform administrative tasks on their cluster, such as produce and consume messages.
