Coinciding with the International Supercomputing Conference, the TOP500 List of supercomputers has been announced. For the first time since November 2012, the U.S. claimed the most powerful supercomputer in the world, leading a significant turnover in which four of the five top systems were either new or substantially upgraded. With the announcement, the TOP500 is also marking its 25th anniversary.

Hitachi Vantara has announced the expansion of the Hitachi Enterprise Cloud family of managed private and hybrid cloud "as-a-service" offerings, including new options for deploying cloud-native application environments. In addition, Hitach is introducing storage-as-a-service offerings that are pre-engineered for on-premises. Oracle has announced availability of the Internet Intelligence Map which provides users with a simple, graphical way to track the health of the internet and gain insight into the impact of events such as natural disasters or state-imposed interruptions. Oracle's Internet Intelligence team frequently publishes data and analysis that informs public understanding of the technical underpinnings of the internet and its effects on topics like geopolitics and e-commerce. With the new availability of the Internet Intelligence Map, Oracle says it is now making core analytic capabilities available to everyone.

Microsoft has reached an agreement to acquire the software development platform GitHub. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire GitHub for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the calendar year. GitHub's current CEO, Chris Wanstrath, will become a Microsoft technical fellow, reporting to EVP Scott Guthrie, to work on strategic software initiatives.

NVMe quickly gained a foothold in the client space as the storage interface of choice for higher end desktops, laptops, and even phones. In the enterprise space NVMe has been used as a direct-attached storage (DAS) option, where storage is accessed through a PCIe interface on the CPU within the server. The advent of NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) promises to expand the utility of NVMe in the datacenter beyond just a DAS replacement, which will push the demand for flash storage even higher.
