And, as the cost of flash declines, data center managers are seeing flash as an attractive alternative to traditional hard-disk methods. The operating system most relied upon by OpenStack users is Linux from a variety of distributors, and the hypervisor in greatest use is KVM (Kernel-based Virtualization Machine), according to the OpenStack 2014 Spring User Survey. The survey was conducted during April 2014 to gather information and feedback from organizations using OpenStack for development/QA, proofs-of-concept, and in production.

To help developers quickly integrate applications and speed deployment of new cloud services, IBM has added more than 30 new cloud services that are available in Bluemix, its platform-as-a-service (PaaS). IBM is also launching Bluemix Garages, collaborative locations where developers can create new apps on Bluemix, learn new development skills, and access IBM's developer ecosystem.

Violin Memory, Inc., a provider of all-flash storage arrays and appliances, has announced the availability of the Violin 6200 Series All Flash Array for the SAP HANA platform. Certification for the solution with SAP HANA was achieved by working in conjunction with the SAP Co-Innovation Lab in Palo Alto, Calif. Splunk, aprovider of a software platform for real-time operational intelligence, and Syncsort, a provider of big data software, have formed a technical alliance aimed at unlocking insights from machine data generated by mainframe systems, a critical and major source of corporate data. The companies say they have joint customers, including top telcos, retailers, insurance, healthcare and financial organizations, who rely heavily on mainframes for critical business operations, but have had difficulty leveraging mainframe data for business insights.

MICROS Systems, Inc., a provider of information technology solutions for the hospitality and retail industries, has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Oracle. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2014, with a purchase price that represents a fully-diluted equity value of approximately $5.3 billion, or $4.6 billion net of cash.

Fusion-io, a developer of flash-based PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) hardware and software solutions has agreed to be acquired by SanDisk Corp., a provider of flash storage solutions. Oracle president Mark Hurd and Oracle executive vice president John Fowler showcased Solaris 11.2 during a recent event in New York City. A complete, integrated and open platform engineered for large-scale cloud environments, Solaris 11.2 combines OpenStack, SDN technology, clustering, and virtualization with an enterprise-class OS. Oracle Solaris is one of two operating system options for Oracle Exadata, and is described by Oracle as a key building block that provides mission-critical reliability, performance, and security that are essential for database consolidation. According to Hurd, cloud and engineered systems are both driven by the same requirement, which is the need to transfer work from the IT budget to the R&D budget to make things work more efficiently.

With Oracle's new ZS3 Series for backup, Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-BA, the company is providing customers with a pre-configured, pre-racked solution co-engineered with Oracle Database to provide extreme backup and restore performance to help meet SLAs. According to Oracle, ZS3-BA helps ensure backup and recovery SLAs are met by scaling to 26 TB/hr for full backups and 17 TB/hr for full restores - a 30% increase for backups and 80% increase for restores over the previous generation.

Oracle has joined the OpenDaylight Project as a Silver Member, and is expanding its application-driven software defined networking (SDN) capabilities in Oracle Solaris 11.2 with plans to integrate OpenDaylight SDN. The aim with the new integration is to help customers improve service quality and take advantage of apps-to-disk SLAs through compatibility with a range of SDN devices, applications and services. It will also allow them to use a common and open SDN platform with OpenStack to manage Oracle Solaris-based clouds.
