Riak CS (Cloud Storage) 1.5 and Riak CS 1.5 Enterprise, Basho's distributed object storage software, is targeted at companies dealing with large amounts of unstructured data, such as videos, images and documents. IBM has acquired CrossIdeas, a privately held provider of security software that governs user access to applications and data across on-premise and cloud environments. Based in Rome, Italy, CrossIdeas addresses the business requirements of auditors and risk and compliance managers withrole analytics, visualizations for better insight into user access, and alignment with compliance and access risk requirements. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Scientists from IBM, AT&T, and Applied Communication Sciences (ACS) have announced a proof-of-concept for technology that reduces set-up times for cloud-to-cloud connectivity from days to seconds."This technology not only represents a new ability to scale big data workloads and cloud computing resources in a single environment but the elastic bandwidth model removes the inefficiency in consumption versus cost for cloud-to-cloud connectivity," said Douglas Freimuth, IBM Research senior technical staff member and master inventor.

The Exadata Database Machine X4-8 has been designed to deliver extreme compute and data throughput for large database workloads using 8-socket database servers, intelligent storage, PCI flash cards, and unified InfiniBand connectivity. Many database administrators now feel that the best way to preserve database reliability may be to take over the job of backing up their own databases. Just as end users are happier when they can do their own password resets or restore an accidentally deleted file, DBAs want greater control over their backups, restores and recoveries, and also the peace of mind of knowing that it is done to their standards. The key to making this work is integrating database applications with purpose built backup appliances (PBBAs).

IBM announced second-quarter 2014 net income of $4.1 billion, compared with $3.2 billion in the second quarter of 2013, an increase of 28%. Total revenues for the second quarter of 2014 of $24.4 billion were down 2% from the second quarter 2013.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a new network-management system that, in experiments, reduced the average queue length of routers in a Facebook data center by 99.6% — virtually doing away with queues. The MIT system, dubbed Fastpass, relies on a central server called an "arbiter" to decide which nodes in the network may send data to which others during which periods of time. "It's not obvious that this is a good idea," says Hari Balakrishnan, the Fujitsu Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and one of the paper's co-authors.

ServiceNow, the enterprise IT cloud company, has signed an agreement to acquire Neebula Systems for approximately $100 million. The addition of ServiceWatch will augment the capabilities of other ServiceNow IT Operations Management products such as Event Management, Orchestration and Discovery. The all-cash transaction is expected to close this month.
