EnterpriseDB, an open source database vendor, announced that IBM has licensed its technology to make it easier to deploy applications on DB2 9.7, the upcoming release of IBM's enterprise relational database. The solution is intended to make it easier to migrate applications from Oracle environments into open source or DB2 environments.

Oracle announced this morning that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Sun Microsystems, on the heels of a breakdown of a proposed acquisition by IBM. The transaction is valued at approximately $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net of Sun's cash and debt.

Cisco has announced its intent to acquire Tidal Software, Inc., a privately held data center management provider. Tidal's intelligent application management and automation solutions that will advance Cisco's aggressive data center strategy, a Cisco spokesperson says. Under the terms of the agreement, Cisco will pay approximately $105 million in cash and retention-based incentives.

RecoverGuard version 4.0, the vendor says, now also offers end-to-end solution for ensuring business continuity across Unix and other distributed platforms, by providing them with a tool by which they can validate and assure both restore point objective (RPO) and restore time objective (RTO).

Oracle has announced availability of Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 5 (10gR5).With this release, the integrated top down management now extends across the full Oracle software stack, from applications to middleware, database, Linux, as well as virtualization. "Enterprise Manager manages everything from applications down.
