The new scale out Power Systems are built from the ground up to harness big data with the new IBM POWER8 processor, a sliver of silicon that measures just one square inch, which is embedded with more than 4 billion microscopic transistors and more than 11 miles of high-speed copper wiring.

More than 1,000 developers and Tizen contributors are expected to meet in San Francisco for the 3-day Tizen Developer Conference, which focuses exclusively on the developer ecosystem around the Tizen open source operating system for converged devices. "Whether you are a platform developer wanting to use Tizen or an app developer who wants to build apps for deployment on Tizen, this is the only place you want to go. The whole point of the Tizen Developer Conference is knowledge transfer," said Brian Warner, manager of the Tizen Project.

Oracle has agreed to acquire GreenBytes, a provider of ZFS technology founded in 2007 with domain expertise in deduplication, replication, and virtualization. Oracle said that GreenBytes' technology complements its own storage solutions and is expected to enhance Oracle's ZFS Storage Appliances. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2014.

EMC is acquiring DSSD, Inc., a developer of rack-scale flash storage architecture for I/O-intensive in-memory databases and big data workloads. It was a tough first quarter for IBM, including soft mainframe sales. Overall, the company saw first quarter revenues of $22.5 billion, down 4% from the first quarter of 2013. Net income was $2.4 billion, down 21% year-to-year.
