Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) revealed several new solutions designed to strengthen the approach to intelligent security operations, DevOps, and data protection. "We're providing visibility without boundaries," said Mark Alba, senior director of product marketing for HP Security. "In an intelligent security operations environment, customers need to have access to all types of data in order to establish their security posture, understand what's happening within their environment, and be able to make real-time, fast decisions on how to remediate potential breaches and protect against them."

Oracle is acquiring LogFire, a provider of cloud-based warehouse management applications for integrated warehouse, inventory and workforce management. The pending addition of LogFire Cloud is expected to complement the logistics functionality of the Oracle Supply Chain Management product suite by adding cloud-based warehouse management capabilities. Oracle also said it is currently reviewing the existing LogFire product roadmap and will be providing guidance to customers.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise today announced plans for a spin-off and merger of its non-core software assets with Micro Focus in a transaction valued at roughly $8.8 billion. The software assets include HPE's Application Delivery Management, Big Data, Enterprise Security, Information Management & Governance and IT Operations Management businesses. According to the vendors, added to Micro Focus' complementary portfolio, the combined assets will create one of the world's largest pure-play software companies

Programming is a literal sport. Code does exactly what it is configured to do, no compromises. When the definition of a task is fuzzy, it is up to the developer to do what they believe is correct. Does the code reflect what is desired? That answer is left open to interpretation. Sadly, developers may not have a clear understanding, and even the users requesting the solution may not be sure. The results can be very painful for an organization. Expectations may not align with the delivered solutions. Users will blame IT; IT will blame users.

Syncsort, a provider of big data and mainframe software, has completed the acquisition of UK-based Cogito Ltd., a maker of specialized software that helps improve the performance of IBM DB2 and CA IDMS database management systems on IBM z/OS, and lowers mainframe costs. With more than 80% of corporate data residing on or originating on mainframes today, this data is a critical ingredient for next-generation machine learning and big data systems, according to Syncsort.

Hazelcast, a provider of an open source in-memory data grid, has announced the general availability of Hazelcast 3.7. According to the company, the latest release is 30% faster than previous versions and is the first fully modularized version of Hazelcast. Each client/language and plugin is now available as a module - speeding up the development process for open source contributors, with new features and bug fixes released as modules alongside Hazelcast 3.7.

IBM has announced that Workday, a provider of enterprise cloud applications for finance and human resources, has adopted the IBM Cloud as part of a multi-year strategic partnership. IBM Cloud will become the foundation for Workday's development and testing environment. IBM Cloud will provide capacity expansion in support of Workday's development and testing requirements. Nervana has announced its planned acquisition by Intel, a move it says indicates that Intel is formally committing to pushing the forefront of AI technologies. The company will continue to operate out of its San Diego headquarters. Terms of the deal were not disclosed by industry estimates placed it at more than $400 million.

I had the pleasure to spend some time with my old friend Mark Souza, a general manager in the Data Platform team at Microsoft, while speaking at the SQL Saturday event in Dublin, Ireland. Now keep in mind that Mark and I have known each other since the 1990s when SQL Server was just being ported to a brand new operating system called Windows NT. Mark and I were having a laugh and more than a twinge of nostalgia about how much SQL Server has improved over the decades and now sits atop the heap on most analysts' "best database" reports. This isn't just two old-timers sharing a few war stories though. This is a living, breathing transformation that is still in process.
