Oracle has rolled out new additions to the SPARC platform. Built on the new SPARC S7 microprocessor, the latest additions to the SPARC platform include new cloud services, engineered systems, and servers. With the new SPARC S7 products and services, Oracle is offering a full spectrum of SPARC offerings that go from public cloud offerings all the way to on-premise server offerings, and opening up new opportunities to customers in their path to cloud computing, said Marshall Choy, VP of Product Management at Oracle.

The next major release of MarkLogic's enterprise NoSQL database platform is expected to be generally available by the end of this year. IBM has introduced an update to its DB2 database software. IBM says the new release, IBM DB2 V11.1, will help developers more easily bridge on-premises applications to the cloud and enable a hybrid data architecture. IBM DB2 is also SQL-compatible with Oracle Database, making it possible to leverage existing skills to move applications from Oracle to DB2, according to IBM.

Red Hat, an open source solutions vendor, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 3scale, a provider of application programming interface (API) management technology. By adding 3scale to its existing portfolio, including Red Hat JBoss Middleware, Red Hat OpenShift, and Red Hat Mobile Application Platform, Red Hat seeks to target the API economy with cloud integration and microservices-based architectures. The transaction is expected to close in June 2016, subject to customary closing conditions.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has agreed to acquire Joyent, Inc., a public and private cloud provider. With Joyent's cloud technology, Samsung will now have access to its own cloud platform capable of supporting its growing lineup of mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud-based software and services. Cisco has unveiled Cisco Tetration Analytics, which is designed to help customers gain wider visibility across all aspects of their data center in real time. The data center analytics platform gathers telemetry from hardware and software sensors, and then analyzes the information using advanced machine learning techniques to address critical data center operations such as policy compliance, application forensics, and the move to a whitelist security model. "Think of it as a time machine for your data center," said Yogesh Kaushik, senior director of product management, Tetration, Cisco.

Splice Machine has announced that it is releasing its database management system, a dual-engine RDBMS powered by Hadoop and Spark, as an open source platform. The community edition will be free for members of the open source community, allowing them to use as well as modify source code, whereas the enterprise edition will include a set of proprietary tools focused on operational features that enable DBAs and DevOps teams to maintain, tune, and keep the platform secure while it's live.

CSC's board of directors has unanimously approved a plan to merge the company with the Enterprise Services segment of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE. The strategic combination of the two businesses will create what the companies' executives called one of the world's largest pure-play IT services companies. For the first time, scientists at IBM Research have demonstrated reliably storing three bits of data per cell using a relatively new memory technology known as phase-change memory (PCM). The current memory landscape spans from venerable DRAM to hard disk drives to ubiquitous flash. But in the last several years, PCM has attracted the industry's attention as a potential universal memory technology based on its combination of read/write speed, endurance, non-volatility and density. For example, PCM doesn't lose data when powered off, unlike DRAM, and the technology can endure at least 10 million write cycles, compared to an average flash USB stick, which tops out at 3,000 write cycles.

EMC has introduced UniK, an open source contribution that enables developers to deploy applications to the cloud and IoT devices by compiling application sources into unikernels. UniK as an open source project is recognized under the DevHigh5 program through EMC {code}, a program that supports and provides recognition to developers and partners for their open source contributions. By releasing UniK as a collaborative open source project, EMC expects the tool to help bring customers closer to cloud native application platforms through the choice of running applications with containers or unikernels.
