Tableau Software is releasing a comprehensive update to its flagship platform and introducing a new iPhone app. "Working with data on a small device presents really unique challenges so we thought very deeply about the experience of what you might want to do there and we're very excited with the iPhone app that's coming out," said Ellie Fields, vice president of product marketing at Tableau. Customers in the past could use their iPhones with their Tableau dashboards and visualizations, but the new Tableau Mobile app now makes it easier for people to interact with and access data on the go.

Informatica has announced a new big data management solution called Informatica Big Data Management that brings together big data Integration, big data quality and governance, and big data security in a single integrated solution. According to the vendor, while more than 67% of enterprises see the big opportunity in big data, the majority of big data projects fail. The new Informatica solution aims to help organizations more effectively overcome the data management challenges that are often at the root of big data project failures. In addition, Informatica Big Data Management is also designed to reduce the need for hand-coding and big data skill sets that are expensive and hard to come by.

Looker, which provides a data discovery and analytics platform, has announced a new offering. According to the vendor, Looker Blocks, which are reusable and customizable, are apps that are components of business logic, such as churn prediction or lifetime value metrics, that can be put together and customized to address data needs company-wide as well as any industry-specific requirements.

Data integration software provider Informatica has been acquired by a company controlled by the Permira funds and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB). Microsoft Corporation and Salesforce Ventures, Salesforce's corporate investment group, are also strategic investors in the company alongside the Permira funds and CPPIB. In making the announcement, Informatica said the new ownership would allow it continue to grow while taking a longer view rather than focusing on quarters.

Google, whose name became synonymous with internet search, is reorganizing to maintain its innovation and competitiveness. The company is creating a new public holding company called Alphabet, with Google as well as other companies, housed within the new structure. According to Larry Page, CEO of Google, the reorganization is part of an effort to avoid getting "too comfortable," observing in a blog post that in the tech industry, "where revolutionary ideas drive the next big growth areas, you need to be a bit uncomfortable to stay relevant.

In 1965, Dick Pick and Don Nelson originally implemented PICK as the "Generalized Information Retrieval Language System" (GIRLS) on an IBM System/360 at TRW for use by the U.S. Army to control the inventory of Cheyenne helicopter parts. That was 50 years ago and MultiValue is still thriving today. It is a testament to the quality and flexibility of the technology for it to be going strong 50 years after its creation. Coincidentally, Rocket Software is also marking a significant event as it celebrates 25 years in business.

A typical organization loses 5% of its revenues to fraud each year, and in the U.S. alone the total cost of (non-health) insurance fraud is estimated at more than $40 billion per year, according to Bart Baesens, one of the authors of a new book on data science techniques for fraud detection. While opportunities for fraud are continuously evolving, fraud detection always has the biggest impact if it is done quickly. Fortunately, says Baesens, big data analytics can help to make early fraud detection possible.

Melissa Data, a provider of global contact data quality and address management solutions, is now offering new international de-duplication capabilities in its MatchUp tool, solving the challenge of duplicate customer data for businesses working with a worldwide customer base. Despite a growing need for real-time information, only about one-quarter of big data projects result in tangible success, according to a survey by Capgemini and EMC, that was explored by Andreas Schmitz in a recent blog on the SAP website. Seventy-three percent of the 1,000 decision makers who responded to the survey declared their big data projects failures because of the lengthy process, sometimes taking months to get the information they need.

MapR Technologies, Inc., a provider of a distribution for Apache Hadoop, is including Apache Drill 1.0 in the MapR Distribution. Drill is a schema-free SQL query engine for Hadoop, NoSQL, and cloud storage. According to MapR, the partner ecosystem is embracing Apache Drill, and a range of companies, including SAP, are working closely with MapR and the Drill community to interoperate BI tools with Drill through standard ODBC/JDBC connectivity.
