Cloudera, a provider of data management and analytics platform built on Apache Hadoop and additional open source technologies, has introduced Cloudera Navigator Optimizer, alongside the production release of Cloudera Enterprise 5.8. First launched in beta in late 2015, Navigator Optimizer, now generally available, is targeted at customers looking to modernize their analytic database or augment their data warehouse solution with Hadoop, and helps to provide insights for predictably offloading key workloads. The tool also provides DBAs with the usage visibility to manage Hadoop data models and guidance to optimize query performance.

EMC has announced that, based on a preliminary vote tally from the Special Meeting of Shareholders held on July 19, EMC shareholders approved the merger agreement among Denali Holding Inc., Dell Inc., Universal Acquisition Co., and EMC, and approved the other two proposals described in EMC's proxy statement relating to the meeting.

Organizations have directed a lot of attention recently to consolidation, automation, and cloud efforts in their data management environments. This will purportedly result in decreased demand for data managers and the need for fewer DBAs per groups of databases. However, the opposite seems to be occurring. In actuality, there is a growing need for more talent, as well as expertise to manage through growing complexity. A new survey, sponsored by Idera and conducted by Unisphere Research among more than 300 data executives, managers, and professionals finds that a more challenging data environment is arising due to a confluence of factors.

Oracle has unveiled two new models of its Oracle Database Appliance, addressing the needs of small and mid-sized businesses. "Many organizations do not have the time, resources or expertise to build their own system and often struggle managing different platforms and systems. Splice Machine has announced that it is releasing its database management system, a dual-engine RDBMS powered by Hadoop and Spark, as an open source platform. The community edition will be free for members of the open source community, allowing them to use as well as modify source code, whereas the enterprise edition will include a set of proprietary tools focused on operational features that enable DBAs and DevOps teams to maintain, tune, and keep the platform secure while it's live.

Teradata has introduced the Teradata Aster Connector for Spark, an integration of Apache Spark analytics with Teradata Aster Analytics. The connector enables pre-built analytics functions from both solutions to be executed from Aster Analytics, enabling anyone who can use Aster Analytics to also run advanced analytics on Spark without the need to learn or know Scala.

The latest release of Oracle Database (12.1.0.2) offers a unique set of features that portend increases in application workload execution, especially for analytics and data warehousing queries. This release, debuts Oracle Database In-Memory which provides a new columnar format - the In-Memory Column Store (IMCS) - for data that is likely to be accessed regularly for aggregation or analysis, as well as other features such as In-Memory Aggregation and In-Memory Joins that potentially offer several orders of magnitude of performance improvement. Finally, the new In-Memory Advisor makes short work of determining exactly which database objects are most likely able to take advantage of the IMCS.

Microsoft has been on a tear for the past couple of years. It has been pushing forward with a very steady stream of powerful new features and capabilities, even entire product lines, within its Data Platform business. But while Microsoft has been hard at work on this deluge of new technologies, it would be completely forgivable if you haven't noticed. The reason it's OK is that Microsoft is advancing on multiple fronts, both in the on-premises product line and even more dramatically with the Azure cloud-based products.
