OpenStack turns five this year, and the project has come a long way in its short life so far. Last year brought major improvements in areas such as upgradeability between versions and overall usability, which upped the appeal of OpenStack to enterprises while also netting important backers such as HP (acquired private cloud vendor and one-time OpenStack competitor Eucalyptus) and VMware (OpenStack was a recurring theme at VMworld 2014).

Teradata has made enhancements to the Teradata Database's hybrid row and column capabilities to provide quicker access to data stored on columnar tables and drive faster query performance. Other relational database management systems store data tables in rows or columns, and each method offers benefits, depending on the application and type of data. However, they have been mutually exclusive. Teradata's new hybrid row and column capabilities allow the best of both worlds.

MySQL has announced MySQL Server 5.7, release candidate 1 (5.7.7), which represents the first major release since the 5.6 GA release 2 years ago. MySQL 5.7 RC 1 adds enhancements in several important areas, which are targeted at both growing with existing customers and their current installed base and demands, as well as trying to enter into new market segments, according to Tomas Ulin, vice president for the MySQL engineering team at Oracle. In particular to broaden its use within enterprise environments, with this release, work has been done in areas such as security, GIS, and query optimization.

SUSE has improved high availability capabilities for deployments of the SAP HANA platform via SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications, the recommended and supported operating system for use with SAP HANA. The new version of the resource agents enhance the high availability component of SUSE Linux Enterprise for SAP Applications, with two additional scenarios for customers to automate their system replication of SAP HANA. In addition to the original performance-based scenario, SUSE now supports cost-based and multi-tier SAP HANA system replication.

SAP has announced it has certified its products on Oracle Database 12c. "More than two-thirds of all SAP customers run their SAP applications on the Oracle Database today. Unstructured data types and new database management systems are playing an increasing role in the modern data ecosystem, but structured data in relational database management systems (RDBMS) remains the foundation of the information infrastructure in most companies. In fact, structured data still makes up 75% of data under management for more than two-thirds of organizations, with nearly one-third of organizations not yet actively managing unstructured data at all, according to a new survey commissioned by Dell Software and conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc.

Oracle announced that fiscal 2015 Q3 total revenues were unchanged at $9.3 billion. Without the currency headwinds caused by the strengthening of the U.S. dollar, the company said total revenues would have been up 6% as measured in constant currency. "Oracle now has a cloud revenue run rate of well over $2 billion a year. We are already the world's second largest SaaS and PaaS company," said Oracle chairman and CTO Larry Ellison during a conference call discussing Oracle's third quarter financial results.

It looks like 2015 will be an important year for big data and many other technologies such as HTAP and in-memory computing. Many businesses have gone from investigation to experimentation to actual implementation. With installations coming online, and more to come in 2015 and beyond, big data will become more efficient and more customer-focused. Hadoop distribution provider MapR Technologies has announced the results of testing based on the recently released benchmark for big data technologies from TPC (Transaction Processing Performance Council). The recently released TPCx-HS benchmark for big data technologies is a series of tests that compare Hadoop architectures across several dimensions. Cisco is also now reselling the MapR Distribution with Cisco UCS, as part of an agreement that includes marketing, sales and training worldwide.

"This acquisition is strategic, synergistic, and will strengthen our leadership in the big data and Hadoop market," said Shimon Alon, Attunity's chairman and CEO, during a conference call this morning discussing his company's purchase of Appfluent, a provider of data usage analytics for big data environments, including data warehousing and Hadoop. "We also expect it to accelerate our revenue growth and to be accretive to earnings." The total purchase price is approximately $18 million, payable in cash and stock, with additional earn-out consideration based on performance milestones.
