Database Management

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) continue to do the heavy lifting in data management, while newer database management systems are taking on prominent roles as well. NoSQL database systems such as Key-Value, Column Family, Graph, and Document databases, are gaining acceptance due to their ability to handle unstructured and semi-structured data. MultiValue, sometimes called the fifth NoSQL database, is also a well-established database management technology which continues to evolve to address new enterprise requirements.

It's still months away, but it is never too early to start thinking about the holiday shopping season, especially since most Americans are already anticipating outages and system failures from their favorite online retailers. According to a survey, 52% of shoppers expect to experience an outage on days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. When web and mobile sites buckle under huge volumes of traffic and experience outages, retailers lose revenue, and their brands suffer significantly. To prepare for the busiest online shopping season, companies need to ensure their systems are ready for extreme scalability and continuous IT operations, year-round.

As companies grow increasingly data-centric in their decision making, product and services development, and their overall understanding of the world they work in, speed and agility are becoming critical capabilities. A common theme in big data and analytics today is "Industry 4.0," representing a new wave of technology that enables the automation necessary for scaling. There's compelling justification for this as companies seek to unlock business value from big data with two broad approaches: the democratization of data with greater access by more users, and the enablement of automation everywhere possible.

Businesses of all sizes across all industries are rapidly adopting digital transformation models that put data at the center of driving the business forward—as they should. However, putting data at the center of everything the business does can be risky without proper planning and rigorous management. Many companies have been wise to introduce data governance programs to protect corporate data assets and establish a framework for operational excellence when it comes to data management and use. Data governance emphasizes the enforcement of defined standards or policies and provides mechanisms for consistency and repeatable processes, but it is not enough to protect businesses in today's world of data.

MongoDB recently announced some interesting, though incremental, enhancements. These included improved "joins" in the aggregation framework, better document validation using JSON schema, and more reliable behavior in the event of network failures. These features attempt to close the gap between the functionality of MongoDB and traditional relational databases - joins, schemas, and commits. On top of these incremental updates, MongoDB announced a couple of features that intrude on functionality usually provided by application servers or desktop programs.

DBAs spend a lot of time on tuning application code and SQL statements to boost efficiency and optimize access. But SQL is only one aspect of database systems performance. It is also important for DBAs to devote time to tuning and optimizing the design, parameters, and physical construction of database objects, specifically tables and indexes, and the files in which their data is stored.

Referential integrity (RI) is a method for ensuring the "correctness" of data within a DBMS. People tend to oversimplify RI, stating that it is merely the identification of relationships between relational tables. It is actually much more than this. RI embodies the integrity and usability of a relationship by establishing rules that govern that relationship.

Poorly written SQL statements can cause significant performance problems in your database environment. According to some experts, poorly written SQL can cause up to 70% of performance problems overall. Adding resources can mask many issues surrounding poorly written SQL, but comes with a cost. Is writing good, quality SQL (including block code—stored procedures, packages, functions, etc.) a dying art? And if it's so important, why is that?
