Database Management

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) continue to do the heavy lifting in data management, while newer database management systems are taking on prominent roles as well. NoSQL database systems such as Key-Value, Column Family, Graph, and Document databases, are gaining acceptance due to their ability to handle unstructured and semi-structured data. MultiValue, sometimes called the fifth NoSQL database, is also a well-established database management technology which continues to evolve to address new enterprise requirements.

When it comes to data protection, every business environment has a unique set of requirements and needs, whether they are looking to secure legacy applications, mobile data, cloud apps, virtualized environments, or any number of different workloads. Unique data requires a unique solution, and yet countless vendors are advertising one-stop solutions described as "one-size-fits-all." But buyer beware: When something seems too good to be true, it usually is, and an easy, one-size-fits-all solution may save you some short term time and money, but can result in major headaches and unforeseen costs in the long run.

Data modelers must look at the big picture of an organization's data ecosystem to ensure additions and changes fit in properly. Simultaneously, each data modeler must be focused on the minute details, adhering to naming standards, domain rules, data type practices, still remaining ever vigilant for instilling consistency across everything they do. And while focused on all of the above, their efforts must culminate in a practical model that serves the individual project's requirements while also being implementable, maintainable, and extensible.

Exponential data growth is hitting organizations of all sizes hard. It's not enough to merely add more capacity; recovery point objectives must be met, and time is money when it comes to data recovery. The simple truth is that to be effectively managed, adequately protected and completely recovered, your data size must be shrunk.

Moving infrastructure, databases, or software into the cloud is no longer a bleeding edge decision. Many organizations have implemented this successfully with great benefits, and more continue to do so. It was not that long ago that we started learning about cloud technologies and capabilities. Technologists listened to webinars and read about the possibilities of such a paradigm shift with cynicism. It sounded great, but what about the practicalities, cost, and risk? The only organizations that seemed to embrace this new landscape were technology companies, while the rest of us stood on the sidelines watching and, on occasion, snickering. We thought nothing would ever replace our data centers. It appears we were wrong … it's time to embrace the paradigm shift.

As a DBA, establishing a reasonable backup schedule for your databases can be a challenging project. It requires you to balance two competing demands: the need to take image copy backups frequently enough to assure reasonable recovery time, and the need to not interrupt daily business. The DBA must be capable of balancing these two objectives based on usage criteria and the capabilities of the DBMS.

Database performance tuning is a complex but extremely important task. However, it can be difficult to effectively optimize databases when there are other "fires" to put out, limited resources, and an increasing number of databases to look after. But that doesn't mean it's impossible, especially with the right approach.

As the business value of big data increases, vendors are offering cloud-hosted big data technology, known as big data as a service (BDaaS). Why choose BDaaS instead of on-premises deployments? Do you lack internal IT expertise in big data? Is the upfront cost for a cluster an issue? Or do you not have the luxury of time to build a cluster? These are all important questions when considering BDaaS.
