Internet of Things

The phenomenon of connected machines is sometimes called the Internet of Things, the Internet of Anything, the Internet of Everything, or M2M (machine to machine). But no matter what the name, the growth of technology related to objects, which never before were network- and computer-enabled, is projected to have far-reaching technological, societal, and economic impact.

The strongest examples of the impact of the Internet of Things are in the industrial sector. Embedded software, sensors, and network connectivity promises to improve the way factories, data centers, oil wells, and cities, airplanes, cars, and even homes are maintained because data can be collected continuously with alerts issues proactively to prevent failures and outages.

According to Cisco's Internet Business Solutions Group, 50 billion devices will be connected by 2020, up from 2010's 12.5 billion. By 2020, data production will be 44 times greater than it was in 2009, and by 2020, more than one-third of the data produced will live in or pass through the cloud, according to Computer Sciences Corp.

Fully automatic removal of private information to enable data sharing and aggregation, while protecting users' privacy is essential in today's privacy-conscious world. To be effective, AI training requires access to large datasets. Thus, one of the biggest challenges is the seemingly unavoidable trade-off between user privacy and the ability to share and aggregate data. At Data Summit Connect 2021 Julia Komissarchik, CEO and founder, Glendor, discussed how it is possible to do both fully automatically during her presentation, "Ensuring Data Privacy."

The modern data warehouse needs to support advanced analytics on multiple types of data from semi-structured to streaming. As the world of data analytics continues to evolve and reshape after a tumultuous 2020, the need for agility is rapidly driving a new era in data culture in which it is imperative to handle data immediately and at scale. While emphasis on self-service data and analytics has been top-of-mind for some time now, the shift to self-sufficiency is held back by culture, not technology. With the new year pushing more robotics process automation at all levels of the business—and for all data users—organizations are becoming more acutely aware that true enablement isn't just about tools and tech. It's about people.

The world changed over the last year. Future historians will complete their theses focusing on different quarters or even specific months of 2020. But one of the most overused cliches in thinking about this period of time has been the idea that "the more things change, the more they remain the same." Let's consider sports in 2020. Major League Baseball had a 60-game season, the NBA finals were played in October, and cardboard cutouts took the place of fans in every sport.
