Oracle announced more than two dozen new PaaS and IaaS services spanning database, Java, integration, analytics, compute, storage, and networking services. "We are now prepared to call our platform and our infrastructure services complete," said Oracle executive chairman of the board and CTO Larry Ellison during the launch event. A key tenet of Oracle's cloud strategy, said Ellison is to offer the same technology on-premise and in the cloud "so you can easily move your data and applications back and forth."

MapR Technologies, Inc., a provider of a distribution for Apache Hadoop, is including Apache Drill 1.0 in the MapR Distribution. Drill is a schema-free SQL query engine for Hadoop, NoSQL, and cloud storage. According to MapR, the partner ecosystem is embracing Apache Drill, and a range of companies, including SAP, are working closely with MapR and the Drill community to interoperate BI tools with Drill through standard ODBC/JDBC connectivity.

Rackspace is launching a dedicated option for MongoDB customers called ObjectRocket for MongoDB databases. The solution, which combines the speed and scalability of the ObjectRocket platform with dedicated hardware and networking for compliance-dependent use cases is aimed at providing the the performance, security and compliance required in high-risk industries such as healthcare, financial services and insurance. "Today we're announcing a fully dedicated cabinet solution to provide a high level of isolation for our customers," said Chris Lalonde, co-founder of ObjectRocket. "On top of that, we are also announcing an on disk encryption for MongoDB."

To help users extract insights from data lakes,Teradata has made a multi-year commitment to contribute to Presto's open source development. Based on a three-part roadmap, Teradata's says its contributions will be 100% open source under the Apache license and will advance Presto's code base, scalability, iterative querying, and ability to query multiple data repositories.

Hitachi Data Systems Corporation (HDS), a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., has completed its acquisition of Pentaho, a data integration, visualization and analytics company. According to Hitachi, Pentaho will retain its existing brand and continue to operate independently as "Pentaho, a Hitachi Data Systems company" under the leadership of its CEO, Quentin Gallivan, who will now report to Kevin Eggleston, senior vice president of Social Innovation at HDS.

SAP SE has announced an Industry 4.0 implementation project with GEA to address condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. Unstructured data types and new database management systems are playing an increasing role in the modern data ecosystem, but structured data in relational database management systems (RDBMS) remains the foundation of the information infrastructure in most companies. In fact, structured data still makes up 75% of data under management for more than two-thirds of organizations, with nearly one-third of organizations not yet actively managing unstructured data at all, according to a new survey commissioned by Dell Software and conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc.
