VMware made a slew of announcements during its annual VMworld conference which was held Aug. 30-Sept. 3 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The theme of this year's conference was "Ready for Any," and, in keeping with that tagline, the company's announcements spanned cloud deployments, data center, and devices.

BlueData is undergoing two big changes that will augment its infrastructure software platform. The company is announcing a $20 million Series C funding round led by Intel Capital and a partnership with Intel that will blend together BlueData's infrastructure software for big data with the data center architecture based on Intel Xeon processor technology.

Platform9, which provides an OpenStack powered service that allows an organization to turn its existing servers into a self-service private cloud, has announced general availability of Platform9 Managed OpenStack for VMware vSphere environments. The new solution enables interoperability of OpenStack with VMware vSphere and is intended to facilitate OpenStack adoption among VMware customers.

Oracle has taken the wraps off Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.0, the latest release of the free and open source, cross-platform virtualization software. Now generally available, Oracle VM VirtualBox runs on standard x86 desktop and laptop computers, and enables developers and users to create cloud and local applications without the overhead of using a full server environment.

SolarWinds, a provider of IT performance management software, is updating its virtualization suite, which provides troubleshooting and monitoring for Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere. "With Virtualization Manager version 6.3, we wanted to give administrators the ability to make remediation and to take action within the console," said Nikki Jennings, SolarWinds' group vice president of products and markets. "With the power of all this information we wanted administrators to see that there's a problem and take action."

"This is making us the most painless infrastructure available," said Achim Weiss, CEO at ProfitBricks. JethroData has closed an $8.1 million Series B financing round led by Square Peg Capital, and including existing investor Pitango Venture Capital. This funding round comes on the heels of the general availability of JethroData's SQL-on-Hadoop software, which uses indexes to query data up to 100 times faster than alternative SQL on Hadoop solutions.

IBM is acquiring Blue Box Group to simplify the running of private clouds using OpenStack-based solutions. Blue Box is a privately held company based in Seattle that provides businesses with a private cloud as a service platform based on OpenStack. IBM says the addition will help businesses integrate their cloud-based applications and on-premises systems into OpenStack-based managed cloud. Additionally, Blue Box strengthens IBM Cloud's existing OpenStack portfolio with the introduction of a remotely managed OpenStack offering. This offering provides clients with a local cloud and increased visibility, control and security.

System z revenues - which doubled in the first quarter of 2015 - proved to be one of the few positive line items in IBM's latest spate of downward numbers. Revenues from System z mainframe server products increased 118% compared with the year-ago period. Total delivery of System z computing power, as measured in MIPS (millions of instructions per second), increased 95%.
