At an event in NYC, Oracle president Mark Hurd and EVP John Fowler unveiled Solaris 11.2, which represents an evolution from operating system to a complete platform, they said. The phenomena of cloud and engineered systems are driven by the same requirement, which is the need to transfer work from the IT budget to the R&D budget to make things work more efficiently, observed Hurd, who asked, "Who really wants to glue an operating system to a server?"

SolarWinds, a provider of IT management software, has acquired Confio Software, which provides database performance management software. The Boulder, Colorado-based software company was purchased for $103 million in cash. Confio's flagship product, Confio Ignite, improves software development and service delivery for systems based on Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, IBM DB2, and SAP Sybase databases, running on VMware virtual servers as well as physical servers.

Veeam Software, a provider of backup, replication and virtualization management solutions for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V, has introduced Veeam Management Pack (MP) v6.5 for VMware. Veeam MP extends VMware monitoring, management and capacity planning to Microsoft System Center, providing complete visibility of physical and virtual infrastructures and applications, all from one console. The Veeam Management Pack connects the VMware virtual infrastructure and puts that data into Systems Center Operations Manager, and then the presentation is done through what is called the Management Pack, Doug Hazelman, Veeam vice president of product strategy, explained in an interview.

New additions to IBM's Flex System portfolio have been added, including new virtualization, networking and management tools. The offerings consist of three systems built on both IBM POWER7+ and a "double dense" x222 system built on x86 technology. IBM also said it has upgraded the Flex System Manager to enable users to monitor and manage up to 5,000 infrastructure end points and do so from any location using iOS, Android and Blackberry mobile devices.

Composite Software has released the Composite Data Virtualization Platform 6.2 SP3. This release really has four elements, Robert Eve, executive vice president of marketing, Composite, tells 5 Minute Briefing. It updates the Hortonworks, Cloudera and the Apache Distribution of Hadoop big data integrations through the HiveServer2 interface, and then fourth, provides new access to Cloudera CDH through Impala. "The key problem with big data is that there are not enough people that are skilled at the big data tools to use them effectively," Eve notes.

Cisco has announced its intent to acquire Composite Software, a privately held company specializing in data virtualization software and services. Headquartered in San Mateo, Calif., Composite provides data virtualization software that enables a simplified and optimized logical view of data from multiple sources across the network, giving applications and business users the ability to access and query all types of data as if it is in a single place. According to Cisco, the acquisition of Composite will expand its Smart Services portfolio and extend its services platform by optimizing data and connecting to the infrastructure layer, enhancing programmability and use of APIs for Cisco customers.

SunGard Availability Services, a provider of information availability and disaster recovery services, has introduced support for virtualized platforms for its SunGard Managed Oracle Services. Sungard's managed Oracle services are designed to run ERP applications and Oracle Databases with pre-certified Oracle server and storage hardware and software, known as Oracle Red Stack. Extending its Oracle management services to virtualized platforms will allow customers to leverage the benefits of scale and agility while also enabling application managers to focus their time on the core business, the company says.

Cloudera, provider of Apache Hadoop-based software and services has partnered with VMware, a provider of virtualization and cloud infrastructure solutions. Cloudera Enterprise is now certified to run on VMware VSphere. HP announced software enhancements and new unified communication support for thin clients such as mobile devices. HP's network performance management software for thin clients, and extended support for Citrix, aim to solve connectivity, security and compatibility issues faced by mobile users. Citrix virtualization and networking technologies, coupled with HP Velocity, are now configured to enable applications such as video streaming, file transfer and VoIP to operate more reliably, even over challenging networks.
